Drifter is part of the Leisure Accommodation Collective (LA Co), a group of lifestyle accommodation venues across Australia and New Zealand, with a growing portfolio of sites including its Byron Bay property. Known for its laid-back, design-led take on hostel and budget hotel living, Drifter attracts a high volume of domestic and international travellers moving through on tight itineraries.
With guests regularly arriving well before check-in and departing well after check-out, and many wanting to explore freely without carrying their bags, a recurring challenge emerged around how to give guests a secure, convenient, and self-service way to store their luggage at Drifter sites.
No Luggage Storage – guests had no convenient, secure option to store bags before check-in or after check-out.
Staffing Burden – front-desk staff were tied up manually handling and monitoring guest luggage instead of guest service.
Operational Costs – manual luggage handling across multiple sites added labour cost and inconsistent processes nationally.
Consultation on locker room layout and space planning across Drifter’s sites, helping fit smart lockers into each property’s available footprint. Our supplier manufactured custom-sized Smart Lockers to suit the specific dimensions and configuration of each site.
Throughout this process, our supplier worked closely with the smart locking technology partner to develop tailored solutions for each site, combining custom-manufactured hardware with proven smart locking technology to suit Drifter’s guest storage needs.
The result was a purpose-built Smart Locker fit-out for guest luggage storage, giving Drifter a self-service, app-driven solution that fit the brand’s modern, independent guest experience while requiring minimal staff involvement.
The self-service interface was designed to be simple and intuitive: guests select their preferred locker duration, enter their email address, and can open their locker anytime with no app download required. This low-friction experience suits Drifter’s fast-moving, independent traveller base perfectly.
Rather than a generic third-party interface, the app guests use to select and access their locker is customised with Drifter’s own branding at each property, creating a seamless, on-brand experience that feels like a natural extension of the guest’s stay rather than a bolted-on third-party service.
As a paid guest storage offering, the lockers were positioned to pay for themselves through guest usage fees, turning what had previously been a cost centre into a new, low-effort revenue stream across the portfolio.
Smart Lockers, custom-manufactured and fitted by our supplier, delivered consistent improvements across Drifter’s sites, streamlining operations and enhancing the overall guest experience.
Custom manufacturing and space-planning consultation helped Drifter fit a flexible, efficient, and guest-friendly Smart Locker solution into its sites across Australia and New Zealand. This not only improved the experience for guests and staff, but also introduced a new, self-sustaining revenue stream across the portfolio.
For Drifter’s Christchurch site, we delivered a highly customised locker fit-out, tailored to the property’s unique layout and branding requirements – reflecting our ability to adapt the Smart Locker solution to each site’s individual needs.
The result reflects our ability to support multi-site hospitality and leisure accommodation groups with tailored, custom-manufactured smart locker solutions at scale.
